Reflective Statement

COLLABORATIONS:

Having come out of the first lockdown and not achieving much in my creative practice, I really tried to take every opportunity this year to make the most out of my final year at university.

I wanted to collaborate with as many people as possible and do as many projects as I possibly could in order to push myself and learn everything that I could explore new skills and engage with things outside of my comfort zone. I think I was successful in doing that having completed numerous projects this year and collaborated with different individuals I really experimented and explored many new things all while trying to develop my own personal practice.

FILMMAKING:

I think I've realise how I really want to develop my practice further from the projects that I've done this year, I never really saw myself as a filmmaker however after collaborating with Saki on the (in)forming movements project, I really enjoyed every aspect of that from building the narrative, to exploring the ideas, the making process the filming and editing. What I struggled with the most was that project and getting it off the ground and into the development stage it was because I feel like we were too free to do what we wanted that I found difficult he narrowing down and scrutinising what I really wanted to do and achieve and sticking to one main subject matter. I don't think I work well under the broadness of something and I need more direction to push my creative process but it was still a good learning curve for me to have experienced.

USING TECHNOLOGY:

I also tried to make a conscious effort to engage more with technology, as things became all online during the pandemic I felt like it was really important for me to refine my skills working on the computer. So from the very first project 'the collective' I really pushed myself to be in charge of the programming for that and then continuing that on to my film project with Saki and then using sketch up for the MA Grad show. I feel more confident that I can pick up the skills quickly to an adequate level and to achieve my ideas.

FUTURE PRACTICE:

It has definitely become very evident that costume is something that I want to pursue in the future as a practitioner in as many aspects as I can, I loved working on film but I also loved doing things that were more experimental. And I really found a love for textile and embroidery this year as well and is something that I want to develop in my own personal practice coming out of all these projects.

After having written about or as forms of therapy and my dissertation I have definitely come to realise how true that is through the work that I've produced on this unit. Having really thrown myself into as many projects as I can I have found so much more motivation to do work and engage with. I felt really anxious at the beginning of the unit due to the lockdown and me feeling very uncertain in my practice; this unit has really allowed me to explore myself and realise my potential as an artist.
